What Is Bronchitis ?

Bronchitis refers to an inflammation of the bronchi or air passage of the lung. It is a breathing disorder affecting the expiratory function. In most cases, some infection also occurs in the nose and throat.
Bronchitis may be acute or chronic. In chronic cases, the disease is of long duration. It is more serious than the acute type as permanent changes may have occurred in the lungs, thereby interfering with their normal movements. Chronic bronchitis is a condition of ageing and presumably degeneration of the respiratory tract that has been subjected to years of irritation by atmospheric pollutants, inhaled organism and, in smokers, to many years of self-inhaled irritants. Symptoms: In most cases of bronchitis, the larynx, trachea and bronchial tubes are acutely inflamed. The tissues are swollen due to irritation. Large quantities of mucus are secreted and poured into the windpipe to protect the in¬flamed mucous membranes. There is usually some fever, and difficulty in breathing as well as a deep, chest cough.
Other symptoms are hoarseness, pain in the chest, lack of energy and" depression. The breathing trouble con¬tinues till the inflammation subsides and mucus is remov¬ed. In chronic cases, besides excessive production of bronchial mucus, there is infection and lung destruction.
Causes: Acute bronchitis may very often occur as a sequel to a common cold or as a result of an attack of influenza. The severity of the disease depends on the extent of the spread of infection which is aggravated by exposure to cold, damp and smoke.
The disease becomes chronic due to recurring attacks of acute bronchitis and wrong food habits. The habitual use of refined foods such as white sugar, refined cereals and white flour products result in the accumulation of toxic matter in the system and this toxic waste collects in the bronchial tube. What Is Cataract ?
Cataract is one of the most common eye diseases. The word literally means a waterfall. It refers to an opacity in the lens of the eye which obscures the vision. Blindness ensues when no light rays can enter the eye through the opacity of the lens.

These are, stagnation of the fluid current in the lens resulting from bad blood condition; deterioration in the nutrition of the lens which diminishes the vitality and resistance of the delicate lens fibres; acid and salt deposits between the lens fibres which have an irritating effect on the lens tissues and exert an increasing pressure on its delicate fibres, gradually destroying them; and disintegration of the lens fibres, clouding the whole lens in the absence of appropriate measures. As in case of most diseases, poisons in the blood stream due to dietetic errors and faulty style of living is the real cause of cataract. The toxic matter in the blood stream spreads throughout the body to find shelter in any available weak spot. It strikes the lens if that part has become weak through strain, excessive use of the eyes or local irritation. The condition becomes worse with the passage of time and then a cataract starts developing. What Is Asthma?
Asthma is an allergic condition resulting from the reaction of the system to one or more allergens. It is the most troublesome of the respiratory diseases. The asthma pa¬tient gets frequent attacks of breathlessness, in between which he is completely normal.

The onset of asthma may be-abrupt or gradual. Sud¬den onsets are often preceded by a spell of coughing. When the onset is gradual, the attack is usually brought on by respiratory infection. A severe attack causes an in¬crease in heart-beat and respiratory rates and the patient feels restless and fatigued. There may be coughing, tightness in the chest, profuse sweating and vomiting. There may also be abdominal pain, especially if coughing is severe. The wheezing sound identified with asthma is produced by the air being pushed through the narrowed bronchi.
Causes: Asthma is caused by a variety of factors. For many it is due to an allergy which may be caused by weather con-ditions, food, drugs, perfumes and other irritants which vary with different individuals. Allergies to dust are the most common. Some persons are sensitive to the various forms of dust like cotton dust, wheat dust and paper dust, certain types of pollens, animal hair, fungi and in¬sects. Foods which generally cause allergic reactions are wheat, eggs, milk, chocolates, beans, potato and beef.
For others, asthma may result from psychic factors. According to some studies about 25 per cent of the young asthmatics have in common a "deeper-seated emotional insecurity and an intense need for parental love and specific protection". Heredity also plays an impor¬tant role, and it has been estimated that when both parents have asthma or hay fever, in more than 75 per cent cases, the offspring also have allergic reactions.
Asthma has also been attributed to malnutrition. Ac-cording to the late Dr. Royal Lee, a nutrition expert, malnutrition in general, with adrenal insufficiency, hypoglycemia and intolerance for carbohydrates are the factors leading to asthma in adults. Dr. Carl J. Reich of Canada also considers asthma as a maladaptive state of the body due to deficiency of certain nutritional elements.
